"I have five friends!"

.....Sapphire said the second she saw me waiting at the gate with Milly in tow.

Seven seconds after that, she introduced me to one of them - Audrey - and a playdate was hastily arranged with Audrey's father for this Thursday after school.

Perhaps the note Sapphire wrote this morning did the trick:

.....or maybe it was Love Chunks who, once at work by 8:00am, rang her say that he loved her, was very proud of her and that he knew that she would get through this tough first stage.
.......or maybe it was me desperately trying to advise her on the way through the school gate this morning, whispering, "Look, you're like a L'Oreal ad. You ARE worth making the effort for, even if YOU have to do the asking yourself, first."

Whatever the methods used, she walked through our front door a completely different girl from yesterday.

Skipper perhaps felt the full weight of her optimism, being christened a Triceratops when she plopped a few well-placed white flowers on his head:

He didn't seem to mind.
There may be more ups and downs ahead, but she's now in her bedroom on the cordless phone, exuberantly sharing the news with her grandparents and I'm sitting here grinning from ear to ear. Oh and still a bit tearful, too.

Aww so glad it went well. She sounds like a very gregarious little girl, I'm sure she'll have no problem making friends and keeping them.

That's fantastic! I'm so glad she's having a better time! And the notes are so sweet! she really sounds like a fantastic little girl and Im sure you'll be annoyed with her hectic social life in no time!

Five friends already!! I knew she'd be okay. With a mum and dad like you two, how could she not?

That's so good to hear, and a relief for you guys too.

Five friends already? It took me years to get 18 followers.

Tell her old Terence is mad jealous!

Why all the concern? Saph seems like just the kind of person I would have been too shy to be friends with when I was nine because she was too popular and outgoing.

ps. Shame on me - I read the title and thought I was about to read an "I have just discovered this great thing called 'Facebook'" post ...

Aww you guys are too kind, too kind! It was pretty clear that I was travelling back to my own miserable start at high school - new level of schooling, new school, new COUNTRY...

I guess too my Mother Lion instinct took over because Sapph hasn't really had many social challenges thrown her way yet. That is, unless you count the 'spot the drunk' game we've developed as we walk along the Racecourse Road shopping strip....

Franzy, even *I* discovered Facebook last year. I remember trying to 'friend' you and a day later you wrote an article about how you were quitting Facebook!

Huh.
You finally worked out why I had to get out ...

I'm so sad and happy and optimistic for Saph. I know all will end well and she'll have lots of wonderful friends very soon but there is no doubt it is a difficult time for her. Not your fault at all, just one of those character tests life throws at us all sometimes. Tell her that her friend Will and all his family are sending her their love and very best wishes.

Yeah it'll be up and down. This morning she said, "I still don't belong here, mum."
"But haven't you made some friends? Besides, you had a playdate yesterday."
"Yeah, but it's not the same as my old school, I don't know where I fit in here."

Ah well. Who does?
